Harare, Zimbabwe | Friday, 20 February 2026 | Today marks the fifth anniversary of“International Day for Commemorating Air Crash Victims and Their Families“, a dayof remembrance, a call for compassion and a commitment to safer skies, for beyond everyaviation crash is more than an incident report, there is a story interrupted, a family foreveraffected and a community left grieving. The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development and Civil Aviation Authority ofZimbabwe (CAAZ), being Zimbabwe Aeronautical Authority and Civil Aviation RegulatoryAuthority, respectively, honor and remember the lives lost in air crashes across the globeand extend deepest condolences to families and loved ones who continue to carry theburden of this unimaginable pain and loss while reaffirming an unwavering commitment toSafe and Secure sustainable Civil Aviation operations. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Council established the InternationalDay for Commemorating Air Crash Victims and their Families in 2022, in support of aproposal made by the Air Crash Victims’ Families’ Federation International (ACVFFI).During the fifth meeting of its 224th Session, the ICAO Council designated 20 February ofeach year as the International Day for Commemorating Air Crash Victims and theirFamilies. Its aim is to provide Governments and the Aviation Industry with a gentlereminder of the obligation upon them to improve the care, resources and timely supportand provision of comprehensive information that accident victims and their loved onesneed following such tragic events. As we embark on National development Strategy 2 (NDS2) our focus will be on strategicinfrastructure upgrades, development of a Civil Aviation Master Plan, capacitation of ATAZ toInternational Standards, implementation of the State Safety Program, strengthened consumerprotection environment, improved safety and security oversight and promotion of domesticaviation. World Aeronautical Information Services Day 2024
May 15, 2024, | Harare, Zimbabwe| Today, the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ) joins the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), International Federation of Aeronautical Information Management Associations (IFAIMA) and the rest of the Aviation community in celebrating World Aeronautical Information Services (AIS) day. This day marks the anniversary of the adoption Annex 15 to the Convention on International Civil Aviation which states the Standards and Recommended Practises for ensuring safety, regularity, efficiency, and economy of international air navigation. Provision of Aeronautical Information Services is one of the most vital roles in support of international civil aviation; the objective of which is to ensure uniformity and consistency in the flow of aeronautical information or data to satisfy operational use of international air navigation. We are celebrating this year’s day under the theme “Conquering Aeronautical Information Management Challenges Together.” The role and importance of aeronautical information or data changed significantly with the advent of the internet, implementation of Area Navigation (RNAV), Required Navigation Performance (RNP), Air Traffic Management (ATM) requirements and air-borne computer-based navigation systems. Hence the traditional Aeronautical Information Services (AIS) has migrated to a broader concept of Aeronautical Information Management (AIM) with a different methodology of information provision and management given its data-centric nature as opposed to product-centric of the AIS. The management of aeronautical information hinges more on quality of data i.e. accuracy, integrity, resolution, timeliness, and traceability. The exponential growth of air travel, advent of new technologies and the increasing demand of efficient operations have created a complex web of challenges that include but is not limited to: However, together we can overcome some of our challenges by: By working together, we can create a seamless, efficient, and safe aeronautical information management system. A system that supports the growing demands of air travel, while minimising errors and reducing delays.
