The department is responsible for certification, licensing, registration, approval, designation and surveillance of Aerodromes, Heliports, aviation fuel depots, structures and obstacles as applicable to ensure compliance with the provisions of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs) and national Civil Aviation Regulations.
The main functions of the Aerodromes and Ground Aids department include;

- The certification and licensing of aerodromes and heliports,
- Safety oversight of aerodromes and heliports (Civil infrastructure, Electrical infrastructure, Rescue and Fire-Fighting Services and aerodromes operations).
- Safety oversight on the planning, design, installation, operation and maintenance of aerodrome/heliport ground aids.
- Certification and safety oversight of aviation fuel depots.
- Assessment and clearance of obstacles within and outside the aerodrome/heliport obstacle limitation surfaces (i.e Telecommunication towers, wind farms, tethered balloons, powerlines, buildings, solar farms etc).
- Approval and safety oversight on aerodromes/heliports design and construction.
- Investigations of aerodrome/heliport related safety incidences/occurrences.
- Development of Aerodromes and Heliports Ground Aids primary and operating regulations.
- Development and publishing of guidance materials to Industry.
- Giving guidance to the Industry on request.
