Falls International Airport – The future Regional Tourism Hub
The Victoria Falls Airport is
situated 21 kilometres South of the Victoria Falls Town in the middle of a
Forest Area. . It provides direct access to the Seventh Natural Wonder of the
World and Heritage Site Mosi-oa-Tunya on the River Zambezi, also known as the
Magnificent Victoria Falls. Currently the runway is 2286 meters long and 30
meters wide. The Airport occupies an area of approximately 500 hectors and
became into being in 1966 as a regional airport.
The Civil Aviation Authority of
Zimbabwe with the assistance of the Government of Zimbabwe has secured a loan
from China Exim bank to the tune of $150 million to construct a 4 km runway and
a new terminal building. The current terminal building will be refurbished and
become a fully-fledged domestic terminal building and the new terminal building
will be the international terminal. The Contractor, a Chinese company called
Jiangsu, has resumed the works on the project.
